Having one of the myasthenias doesn’t necessarily prevent you from getting life insurance or critical illness cover, however, it can be more difficult to find cover, and there may be some exclusions to what the company will cover, so be sure to read the small print carefully.

It is essential that you declare your myasthenia to the company; otherwise, your policy might be invalid. We suggest using a price comparison website to find a company that will cover you and compare the products and prices.

Using a broker

You could use a broker if you’re struggling to find a provider. ‘Non-advised’ brokers are the cheapest because they get their fee from the insurance company rather than from the consumer. They’re the best choice if you know exactly what kind of cover you want. ‘Advised’ brokers are also available if you need help choosing a life insurance product, but you’re likely to pay more for your insurance premiums.

We suggest using the AMII website to find a broker: All brokers registered with AMII must be registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) or the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and must sign up to a professional code of ethics. If they charge a fee, they must tell you this upfront.

Reach out to others

Whilst we can’t recommend an insurance provider, we do know that our members have been able to get cover. We would recommend you reach out to the groups on Facebook and ask other members. If you are not on the groups and do not wish to be, we could ask the question on your behalf.
